Historic St. Croix Sites & Buildings

Did you know the oldest structure on St. Croix is from 1740? You can still see remnants of historic buildings on St. Croix, in the towns, on the hill-sides and along the shore. Learn more about some of our historic sites and buildings by clicking on each thumbnail below.

  • Customs House in Frederiksted with the Freedom Statue. Frederiksted is referred to as “Freedom City.”
  • Christiansted National Historic Site. The old Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse built in 1749, where Alexander Hamilton worked as a young man before immigrating to America.
  • Founded in 1760, Cruzan Rum is the most honored rum distillery in the world. Tours are available Monday through Friday for a nominal fee.
  • Ruins that were once sugar plantations still remain, even after 100+ years!
  • Estate Whim is a very popular ruin to visit on St. Croix.
  • Christopher Columbus sailed into Salt River on November 14, 1493. Columbus’ men got off the boat but Columbus never did. Columbus named St. Croix Santa Cruz ("Holy Cross").
  • Completed in 1753, the Steeple Building was embellished with a steeple between 1794 and 1796. For a time it served as the headquarters of the Church of Lord God of Sabaoth.
  • Lawaetz Family estate was built in the 18-century and was converted from a plantation to a dairy farm in the 1890s.
  • Historic ruins can be found all over St. Croix, even on the grounds of your resort or hotel!
  • Some ruins are easily accessible from the roadside, but please do not tresspass!
  • Fort Frederiksted named after Frederick V of Denmark, who purchased the Virgin Islands (formerly the Danish West Indies) in 1754.
  • Great House at the Whim Museum where you can tour the house and the grounds of the old plantation.
  • Estate Butler Bay
  • Fort Christiansvaern built in 1738 is part of the Christiansted National Historic Site.
  • Tour the grounds at the Whim Museum and get an idea of what life was like in the 1800s producing sugar cane.
  • Point Udall – The Eastern most point of the United States. A sundial known as the Millennium Monument was built above Point Udall for the New Year's celebration in 2000.
  • The Hams Bluff Light Station was designed and built in 1915 by the Danish government.
  • Originally built in 1747, the Government House was known as one of the most elaborate governor's residences in all of the Lesser Antilles. Today it is used as government offices and meeting rooms.
  • St. Paul's Anglican Church located was originally built in the 1840s but was restored in 1998 after a devastating fire.  The tower is made of local limestone and Danish brick.
  •  Located on the west end of the island, Sprat Hall is the oldest plantation on St. Croix and was built between 1650 and 1690 when the French owner the island.
